MoroccoStop the repression! For the liberation of allpolitical detainees in Morocco!
National Authority for Solidarity with PoliticalDetaineesThe INSAD (National Authority for Solidarity withPolitical Detainees) is a unitary framework of thesocial and political left against the wave ofrepression which has recently hit Morocco. Itpromotes, among other initiatives, an activistcampaign to gather a million signatures demanding theliberation of arrested and sentenced activists. It has appealed at a press conference for active andprolonged international solidarity in all its forms. An appeal to international solidarity which ESSFwishes to fully support. On May 1 demonstrators, notably in Agadir and Ksar elKebir, were arrested, tortured, charged and sentencedto long prison terms (two and three years) for havingchanted slogans “damaging the sacred values of theKingdom”, which constitutes a patent violation to theright of free opinion and expression. At Beni Mellal demonstrators were arrested following apeaceful demonstration of solidarity with thosesentenced on May 1 and accused of the same crimes asthem. If some were acquitted, others receivedsuspended penalties, heavy fines or custodialsentences. Such was the case with Bougrine, a foundingmember of the AMDH, aged 72. He has already spent 18years in the jails of Hassan II and his fatherMohammed V, a symbol of the continuity of therepression exerted under the “reign of the threekings” since independence in 1956.In Rabat, the national body for solidarity with thedetainees of May 1st, 2007 (INSAD), bringing togetherseveral associations, trade unions and democraticorganisations has appealed for a solidarity rally. Theforces of order charged the demonstrators withoutwarning and with great violence. Solidarity has becomea crime. Nearly thirty people were hospitalised afterbeing beaten, including the new president of theMoroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH), KhadijaRyadi. This police intervention was led by generalLaanigri, one of the main sponsors of the 0humanrights violations, institutionalised torture anddisappearances under the reign of Hassan II, whoremains in post. This escalation of repression gives the lie to theofficial discourse of the construction of a state oflaw or of democratic advances. Punishment for damagingsacred values recalls the judgements of the famous“years of lead”. It seeks to discourage the combat ofthe democratic forces, social movements and citizensfor full freedom of expression and defences of theirsocial and democratic rights. The AMDH “recalls thatrepression fell on the unemployed, the workers, thecivil servants, the handicapped and the defenders ofhuman rights at a time when the persons who pillagepublic property, who commit political and economiccrimes enjoy impunity” It is the fight for ademocratic Morocco based on social justice which istargeted. We will not accept it and we bring our fullsolidarity to the democratic and social resistancemovements. Thus, we demand the unconditional releaseof all political prisoners, the overturning of theirsentences, and an end to repression by the Moroccangovernment.PETITIONFor the liberation of political detainees in MOROCCO!For an end to the repression of social and democraticresistance! We support the activists and members of the social, trade union and democratic movements arrested andcharged with “damaging the sacred values of theKingdom” following the demonstrations of May 1 or forhaving simply demonstrated their solidarity. We demandtheir immediate and unconditional liberation, theoverturning of their sentences and prosecutions aswell as the full respect of the right of expression, organisation and demonstration. Our solidarity goes tothose who fight for a democratic Morocco and socialjustice and we demand an end to all repression.NAME/FIRST NAME:PROFESSIONASSOCIATION/POLITICAL GROUP/TRADE UNION:COUNTY:Send your signatures to this appeal to:firstname.lastname@example.org
